Thinning Edges? Why Your Favorite Slick Bun Might Be the Problem

Slicked-back buns, snatched ponytails and sleek braids are everywhere right now. They look clean and polished, and I get why everybody's wearing them. But in my chair, I'm seeing the other side of that trend: thinning edges, a hairline that's creeping back, and little bumps along the temples.

There's a name for it: traction alopecia. It's hair loss caused by constant pulling on the hair follicle. The good news is that when it's caught early, it can often be stopped and improved.

Signs your style is pulling too hard

  • Your edges look thinner than they did six months ago

  • You feel tenderness, soreness or a headache after styling

  • Small bumps or redness along the hairline or nape

  • Short, broken hairs around your temples

  • Your hairline looks stretched or uneven

If any of these sound familiar, your hair is telling you something. Listen to it now, not later.

Can edges really grow back?

In many cases, yes, especially when you act early. The longer the pulling goes on, the harder it is for the follicle to recover. That's why I always say don't wait until it's gone to get it looked at.

What I recommend

  1. Give your hairline a break. Rotate your styles, and loosen the ponytails, buns and braids around your edges.

  2. Skip heavy gel and harsh brushing on the same spot every day.

  3. Be gentle at night. Use a satin bonnet or pillowcase.

  4. Care for the scalp, not just the hair. A healthy scalp grows healthy hair, which is why I use plant-based, toxic-free products.

  5. Get a professional look. Thinning edges aren't always caused by styling. Stress, hormones, postpartum changes, thyroid issues and medications can all play a part. A consultation helps find the real root cause.

Every style is a protective style

I don't believe you have to give up the styles you love. With the right technique, tension and aftercare, every style is a protective style. My job is to help you wear what you love and keep your hairline healthy.
